Culinary Adventure on the Orient Express

This past summer my family and I set off across Europe for an adventure of a lifetime on the Venice Simplon Orient Express. The trip was a journey back in time as we retraced the historic route made famous by Agatha Christie in Murder on the Orient Express (the newest film version is in theaters now!).

Much like Dame Christie, I could fill a novel with the wonders of life aboard this palace on wheels. From the incredible service of our porter Davide to the impeccably restored dining and sleeping carriages, no detail was overlooked, no whim denied and for a week we lived like royalty.

The train holds many marvels: it’s famous Cote d’Azure dining car decorated in Lalique glass, a bar car that never closes, espresso and cookies delivered to you in bed at any hour, and food to rival any Michelin-starred restaurant! The food is even more remarkable given that it is created in three tiny kitchens that are in perpetual motion. Come with me now on a journey through some of the culinary delights of the Orient Express.

Departing Paris we enjoyed our first meal on the train - a lavish lobster brunch!

Yet another memorable meal: tender, crusted rack of lamb and langoustines as we rolled towards Bucharest!

Our arrival in Istanbul and final meal on the train was spectacular. A glamourous twist on traditional meze and dramatic presentation made for the perfect end to an incredible adventure!

The holidays are a perfect time to bring a little glamour and European adventure into your kitchen. Learn a few recipes to “wow” your guests or treat yourself to a sumptuous meal at one of The Chopping Block's special holiday cooking classes. Learn how to make Lobster Thermidor in our Surf & Turf cooking class Saturday November 25 (and several other dates in December!). Slip on your sweaters and head for the Alps with our Christmas in the Swiss Alps December 3rd, 21st and 26th. Or enjoy the traditions of Italy with the Feast of the Seven Fishes on December 22nd and 23rd (I’ll be at the one on the 23rd!)
