Science Says Drink 8 Cups of Water(Melon) a Day, Right?

I’ve been in full-on summer mode for weeks now and between boozy popsicles, frozés and too many barbecues, I’m feeling a little parched. That’s why I was delighted to find that I could have my watermelon and drink it too with The Chopping Block's new Watermelon Tap Kit!

In fifteen minutes, I created a delicious summer treat in a delightful container. Today I’m making Watermelon Agua Fresca. Sweetened only by the natural sugar of the watermelon, this is a wonderfully refreshing and healthy summer drink. And, if I give up on this health thing, it makes a great container for some more grown up beverages!

First, gather your supplies.

Select the best seedless watermelon you can find. Remember that it should be oblong, rather than round, to create a shape that will stand up easily, allow room for the tap and give the most interior capacity for your beverage. Gather some lemons; herbs like mint or basil; a little ginger for some spice; a pinch of salt to give your agua fresca some seasoning; a pitcher to collect all of your watermelon flesh, a blender and a strainer. If making a summer cocktail, grab some vodka, tequila or prosecco as well!

Cut and use the included tool to scoop out your watermelon.

Use the tool to make a hole two inches from the bottom then screw in the tap.

Throw all the ingredients into a blender adjusting lemon and ginger to taste. Strain, pour into your watermelon, add and enjoy!

Your tapped watermelon can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days. Keep it on a shelf and fill it with plain old water for a lightly flavored refresher or try different fruit juice combinations. The tap can also be used on a pumpkin to hold your favorite fall beverages.

The Watermelon Tap Kit is available at our Lincoln Square and Merchandise Mart Locations.
