Keep Meals Fresh with a Home Garden All Year Long

Are you someone who likes to grow your own garden, sad that the summer gardening season is over, or didn’t get a chance to start one this year? Well, it's not too late! I have the perfect solution for your own indoor garden to keep your meals fresh all year long.

There is nothing like fresh grown vegetables or fruits to add to your meals and to your favorite recipes from The Chopping Block. But you don't have to spend a ton of money on them! You can be resourceful and reuse fruits or vegetables you’ve already grown from your garden or bought from the grocery store. With proper care and sunlight exposure, you can regrow raw vegetable heads or fruits indoors. Some of the plants I regrow are lettuce, celery, green onions, and avocado like this one.

Here is what you need to get started:

  • Heads of your favorite raw vegetables
  • Planting pots
  • Soil

Fill the planter with soil and leave a little space to place the root of the vegetable head into the soil leaving the top half sticking out. Set it on a windowsill that attracts sunlight and water your plant to keep the soil moist. It’s that simple! You can also easily grow your own microgreens at home.

In just a few weeks, you'll have new fresh fruits or vegetables to add to your meals. Be creative and have a fun DIY project day with your family or friends. Get everyone involved! Use recycled cans or mason jar bottles. Try new vegetables, or use lemon seeds from a used lemon. If the first time doesn’t work, try again and don't get discourages. It took me a few tries before I got it right.

After your first batch of vegetables, your green thumb will want to keep growing more. The more classes I take at The Chopping Block and grow my own fresh organic foods, the more I want to share with everyone and inspire.

My first and until this day favorite cooking classs is Steakhouse DIY. This class' menu is the perfect meal to use homegrown vegetables in the Cobb salad with fresh squeezed lemon dressing, a side of cooked vegetables and double baked potato and a delish blueberry peach desert topped with ice cream. Yum!
